Marshall and Plumb, Atmospheric, Ocean and Climate Dynamics: An Introductory Text, (Academic Press, 2007)

I have not read this book.

However, looking for a basic explanation of current thinking in climate science, and believing that university textbooks might be a good place to start, I carried out a search of Amazon online with the key words "climate science" and "textbook". This was essentially the only book to showed up.

This leads to two observations.

  1. Climate science is a sufficiently new area of scientific inquiry that it is yet to have its own textbook for university students and others looking for an explanation of the science.
  2. For climate scientists trying to explain their science to an often skeptical public, the current gap in a basic textbook indicates they have some distance yet to travel.

The good news is the American Meteorology Society is developing a climate science course, include a textbook, that should be available in the fall of 2010.
