Climate Change Book Review

Mayer Hillman with Tina Fawcett and Sudhir Chella Rajan, The Suicidal Planet: How to Prevent the Global Climate Catastrophe, (Thomas Dunne Books, 2007), 293pages

This is a basic book on climate change. It describes the problem, talks about current strategies, and proposes solutions.

He offers an interesting list of excuses for doing nothing:

  1. I am already doing my best.
  2. There is nothing I/we can do about it.
  3. It's not my problem.
  4. There are more urgent and important problems now.
  5. Technology will halt climate change.
  6. It is the government's responsibility.

Among current strategies, he examines technological solutions, and international solutions.

Despairing of government led and technology solutions, Hillman focuses on individual responsibility, and what individuals can do.

The problem with Hillman's conclusion is that individual responsibility will not go far enough when a substantial number of individuals are not currently addressing the issue.
